This is the most comprehensive online course and begins with a straightforward explanation of how the winemaking process affects what ends up in your glass – exploring the different regions and techniques that determine wine’s characteristic flavour and personality. You will also hone your wine tasting skills and learn of an original take on wine and food alchemy.

REQUIREMENTS, TOPICS and COURSE CONTENT

Besides a fair knowledge of English and some basic computer skills, there are no other entrance requirements. Participants must be minimum 17 years of age.

Lectures have been carefully embedded into a well-considered pedagogical framework. The course is tutored online by Georges Meekers, Malta's award-winning member to the Circle of Wine Writers (UK). Lectures are available immediately (48 hrs after signing up). The course fee does not include any possible expenses for the wines to be sampled.

HWC002This course is self-paced and may be completed within up to 18 months from commencement. Successful candidates will be awarded the coveted certificate. These 25 online lessons are supported by several resources such as video clips, podcasts, interactive wine maps, grape glossaries, extra reading material, interaction with fellow students, quizzes, short assignments and home wine tasting tasks covering a list of 30 wines.

Origins and short history of wine, the vine and different international and native grape varieties, vineyard operations and a year in the life of a vigneron, sustainable viticulture and the meaning of terroir.

WINEMAKING
Making red, white and rosé wines, techniques for sparkling and fortified wines, maturation and blending, bottling, packaging.

MAJOR WINE REGIONS, TYPES and STYLES OF WINE
Labelling regulations, history, culture and traditions in wine producing countries France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the rest of the world.

WINE EVALUATION
Professional wine evaluation based on visual and organoleptic properties. Assessment of quality in relation to commercial position.
